Healthy Families, Healthy Futures

“What a wonderful adventure of cooperation and innovation – the Jr League, United Congregational Church, the YMCA and the Center for Family Justice – all putting our skills and spirits together to learn how to eat, cook, play  – and live healthier! Parents, children, and friends  – all learning and growing together around a table of yummy food. The blessings are abundant. The community is enriched.   And our spirits are more whole.  This is transformation at its finest.” – Rev. Sara D. Smith, Esq. from the Norma Pfriem Urban Outreach Initiative

Healthy Families Dinner Series Project Overview:

The Healthy Families Dinner Series began in January 2014. This project is a collaboration between the JLEFC and three organizations that are vital to our community – The Center for Family Justice, the Norma Pfriem Urban Outreach Initiative and the Bridgeport YMCA. The Junior League of Eastern Fairfield County is proud to call these organizations our partners.

The programs purpose is to increase the physical and developmental health of young children focusing on literacy, parent/child/family connection, healthy eating and healthy lifestyles to better prepare children to succeed in school.

Dinners are held at the United Congregational Church in Bridgeport, Ct.  To date, we are delighted to have had 11 families participate. At each dinner, participants prepare a meal and eat together. During the process, families learn more about healthy meal planning choices. Additionally, there are activities that incorporate elements of literacy, exercise and self-care. The JLEFC funds and directs this program.

As this program is still in its infancy, we look forward to seeing it grow and to getting more families involved in this exciting program.
